FAQs
How old do you have to be to join the band?
Lord Selkirk is a youth band for ages 8-18 years old.
Do new members need experience with music or playing an instrument?
No. All levels are welcome.
Who teaches the students?
Many of the instructors are past members of the Lord Selkirk band. They are volunteers and give a great deal of their time to ensure your child has a great experience.
4. How much does it cost to join the band?
There is an annual registration fee which covers insurance for your child while attending band sponsored events and membership in the Prairie Pipe Band Association of Manitoba (PPBAM). (PPBAM is the governing body for competition in Manitoba and membership is required to participate in competitions.)
The first year’s fees are waived for new students. Fees can fluctuate from year to year and are set at the AGM in October.
How do I sign up for my child for their first day?
Simply send an email to info@lsrfmpb.ca to let us know when you plan to attend your first lesson.
Will my child start playing the bagpipes or the drums on their first day?
No. Pipers learn the basics on an instrument called a chanter. Drummers learn the basics on drum pads.
7. How much do the instruments cost?
The band covers the cost of instruments. All equipment replacements will be the responsibility of the new student/new band family. The cost of the equipment will be based on what the band pays for them at the time of ordering.
8. What is a grade?
Bagpipe bands are classified into five competitive levels, ranging from Grade 5 (beginners) to Grade 1 (premier level), based on skill, precision, and experience. We are a Grade 5 band.
Grade 5 (Novice/Entry Level): New bands or those with beginners, focused on learning the basics of band competition.
Grade 4 (Developing): A common level where most bands start; focuses on accurate, consistent playing of simpler tunes.
Grade 3 (Intermediate): Bands with good technique and tuning ability, playing more challenging repertoire.
Grade 2 (Advanced): High-level playing with strong technical proficiency and musical expression.
Grade 1 (Premier/Top Level): Elite, top-tier bands often playing at near-professional standards
What grade is my child in?
New students start at a grade 5 level. As they progress and improve, they will move to the next level. The instructors will advise when your child moves to the next level.
10. How long does it take to get bagpipes or drums?
This varies for every child and typically ranges from 10-18 months[LG1] .
11. How often are practices? How much time is needed to be a member of the band?
Main practices are every Saturday morning September-June. New chanter/drum pad students typically spend about an hour with their instructors 9-10am. Kitted band members practice for the full morning 9am-12pm.
There is also an extra practice on Tuesday evenings from 6-7pm.
In addition to practices, the band performs numerous times throughout the year.
Band members are encouraged to spend practicing every day. Consistency is key. The more time band members can practice at home, the quicker they will improve.
12. What is a kitted band member?
When a band member is ready to get their bagpipes or drum set, they will also get “kitted.” This means they will receive the full band uniforms. The Uniform Dress Guide can be found here.
13. How do I know if my child is eligible to enter a competition?
Speak to your child’s instructor. They will let you know if your child is ready to compete and which song they should play. Information on how to register will be in the weekly newsletter or you can speak to any member of the executive. Other parents are also more than happy to help answer questions and share their experiences with the band.
14. How do I know if my child is progressing as expected?
Speak to your child’s instructor. They are more than happy to answer your questions and let you know what your child is working on and if they are having difficulties with anything specific. They also write notes in your child’s music book to help them remember what to work on.
15. How do I stay informed?
There is a Parent meeting once a month. You can sign up for the weekly newsletter (emailed every Thursday) by filling out the form at the bottom of the homepage of our website. https://www.lsrfmpb.ca/home.
